Birmingham’s Modeling Scene: A Personal Perspective
Having worked in both commercial and artistic contexts as a model, I’ve come to appreciate the unique character of Birmingham’s modeling scene. While I can only speak from my personal experience, I find that Birmingham offers something distinctly different from the fashion capitals of the world.
In New York, models often function as living mannequins, expected to disappear behind the clothing and conform to rigid industry standards. Paris celebrates a particular kind of elegant sophistication that can sometimes feel prescriptive. But here in Birmingham, I’ve found a refreshing creative freedom that allows for more authentic expression and artistic collaboration.
The Birmingham approach to modeling—at least in my experience with creatives like Leisa, Vero, and Elizabeth—centers on the model as an active creative partner rather than merely a canvas. There’s room for character, personality, and artistic input that might be discouraged in more commercially driven environments. This regional difference creates space for more diverse expressions of beauty and more genuine artistic partnerships.
What I value most about working in Birmingham’s creative scene is the emphasis on relationship. Shoots like this one happen because of genuine connections between artists who respect each other’s craft. When I run into Leisa at a restaurant and meet her artist friends, it’s not just networking—it’s community. This translates into more meaningful collaborative work where everyone’s artistic contribution is valued.# Capturing Essence: The Art of Modeling
When paths cross, art happens
In the world of modeling, the pursuit of perfection often leads us down intricate paths, where we strive to craft moments that transcend the ordinary. It’s an artistry of aspiration, where we mold experiences both in front of and behind the camera, seeking to capture that elusive ideal. As my journey in the modeling world has unfolded, I’ve discovered that modeling is more than just a vocation—it’s a form of artistic meditation where authenticity meets creative expression.
An Evening Reconnection
I was just finishing dinner at LeFresca, enjoying the last bites of my meal as the evening settled over Birmingham. As I stepped out into the cooling air, a familiar face appeared—Leisa Cole, the photographer with whom I’ve collaborated on several magazine covers over the years. Our professional relationship has evolved into a comfortable creative partnership where we understand each other’s rhythms and instincts.
Leisa wasn’t alone. She introduced me to two artists she was working with: Vero the Traveling Artist and Elizabeth Russell. The chemistry was immediate as we discussed their current projects and artistic visions. Having worked with Leisa before, I was intrigued by the possibility of collaborating with this expanded creative team. Before parting ways that evening, we had penciled in a shoot for a few days later, planning to meet bright and early to capture the morning light.
The Dream Team
The morning of our shoot arrived with perfect clarity—the kind of crisp, bright light that photographers dream about. Having worked with Leisa on magazine covers before, I knew her exceptional ability to capture just the right moment. But this shoot would be different, bringing together multiple creative energies:
Leisa Cole: The Wizard of Photography – Leisa and I have developed a professional shorthand over our previous collaborations. Her technical skill behind the camera is remarkable, but what truly sets her apart is her ability to make models feel completely at ease, allowing authentic moments to emerge naturally. Her direction is clear but never constraining, creating space for genuine artistic expression.
Vero the Traveling Artist – Meeting Vero was a revelation. Her Alice in Wonderland-inspired pieces immediately captured my imagination—whimsical yet sophisticated creations that invite viewers into a world where fantasy and reality blur. Her global perspective brings a unique dimension to Birmingham’s art scene, infusing local aesthetics with international influences.
Elizabeth Russell – Elizabeth’s styling expertise was evident in every piece she brought to the shoot. The standout was an extraordinary hand-woven wool knit jacket that weighed over 50 pounds—a true work of art that transformed me as soon as I put it on. Despite its weight, which would “keep even the thinnest warm on an arctic chilled night,” the jacket created fascinating possibilities for movement and form that I was eager to explore before the camera.

My Morning in the Studio
As morning light streamed through the windows of Leisa’s studio, I felt that familiar blend of excitement and focus that comes at the beginning of a promising shoot. Working in Leisa’s creative space is always comfortable for me—a place where artistic experimentation is encouraged and technical excellence is a given.
The session began with me wearing that remarkable 50-pound wool creation. The weight of it immediately altered my posture and movement, creating a fascinating resistance that translated into unexpected shapes and lines before the camera. Rather than fighting against its weight, I worked with it, allowing the piece to guide my movement while adding my own intentional artistry.
What I love about working with Leisa is her ability to capture motion. While many photographers focus on static poses, Leisa excels at finding those in-between moments that reveal something more authentic and alive. As I moved through the space, the weight of Elizabeth’s extraordinary creation created a compelling counterpoint to my motion—momentum and resistance captured beautifully on film.
The Alice in Wonderland aesthetic of Vero’s artistic direction allowed me to tap into a playful, theatrical energy that contrasted with the more controlled, editorial work I’ve done for magazine covers. This freedom to explore character and narrative through movement is something I rarely find in commercial modeling work but cherish in artistic collaborations like this one.

A Celebration of Creativity and Connection
What emerged from our morning studio session was a collection of images that celebrate the fusion of art, fashion, and human expression through the language of movement. Each frame captured not just a look or a pose, but a moment where multiple creative visions aligned perfectly—Leisa’s eye for composition, Vero’s artistic direction, Elizabeth’s exquisite craftsmanship, and my own physical interpretation.
“The 50-pound wool creation requires four hands to position properly—Elizabeth and Vero work in tandem, adjusting the intricate folds while I prepare for the weight.
The resulting images stand as a testament to what happens when artistic minds collaborate without constraints. They capture not just external beauty, but the internal beauty of creative synergy and authentic expression. The film medium added another dimension, preserving not just static moments but the flow of energy and emotion that digital sometimes fails to convey.
This particular shoot reinforced something I’ve always believed about modeling: at its best, it’s a conversation. Between model and photographer, between body and garment, between artist and audience. The weight of that extraordinary wool jacket became a creative challenge rather than an obstacle. Vero’s Alice in Wonderland aesthetic invited playfulness and storytelling. Leisa’s careful direction created space for both precision and spontaneity.
My Modeling Philosophy
This experience exemplifies my personal modeling philosophy—where modeling transcends mere appearance to become a form of artistic expression and communication. For me, modeling is a visual language where the body becomes both the message and the messenger. It’s about finding that perfect balance between technique and instinct, between following direction and contributing creative energy.
The best modeling happens when there’s trust between all creative partners. When I step in front of Leisa’s camera, there’s an established understanding that allows me to be fully present in each moment, both vulnerable and powerful simultaneously. This trust is what allows for true artistic risk-taking and the capture of authentic moments that resonate with viewers.
When we strip away the commercial pressures that often dominate the fashion industry, we return to the pure art form that modeling truly is—a collaboration between photographers, stylists, artists, and models that creates something greater than any could achieve alone. In Birmingham’s creative community, I’ve found a space where this kind of authentic artistic collaboration not only exists but thrives.
The morning light, a 50-pound wool jacket, an Alice in Wonderland aesthetic, and trusted creative partners—these were the ingredients for a photoshoot that reminds me why I love modeling as an art form.
There may be others champing at the bit, but Ralph Lauren’s spring collection proves that he remains the master of all-American fashion. From the blue-and-white striped top paired with a navy floral skirt and accented with a neck scarf, to the matching twinset—its cardigan tied at the waist of a pair of periwinkle pants—the effort was a welcome departure from the decadence we so often expect from a fashion show. (Well, at least most fashion shows.) Lauren also made a great case for the brown leather belt. It will certainly be at the top of many spring shopping lists
